Exciting News: Sri Lanka Lifts Car Import Restrictions with New Taxes – Discover What It Means for You!
Sri Lanka has officially relaxed its restrictions on car imports, signaling a gradual return to normalcy following a protracted economic crisis. According to a newly issued government gazette, a 50 percent surcharge on customs import duty for personal vehicles will be effective immediately, marking a significant shift in the nation’s import policies.
In addition to this development, separate gazettes outline updated tax regulations for electric vehicles alongside the introduction of a luxury vehicle tax, which ranges between six and sixty million Lankan rupees per car. These measures are part of an overarching strategy to stabilize the economy while encouraging environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
The relaxation comes after a lengthy prohibition on the import of over 3,000 goods, implemented in response to economic turmoil in 2021. This ban was tied to concerns over excessive money printing and IMF-advised financial strategies. Despite the eased import rules, restrictions remained firmly in place through stringent taxes and exchange controls, driven by conflicting policies that previously exacerbated currency depreciation concerns.
Under the new import policy, only those importers registered with the Department of Motor Traffic and government bodies are permitted to import multiple vehicles. In contrast, other importers are limited to bringing in one vehicle per 12-month period. This calibrated approach aims to balance the liberalization of imports with fiscally responsible controls that prevent excessive outflow of foreign currency.
Sri Lanka’s recent policy adjustments indicate a calculated move to revive the automotive market, reduce fiscal strain, and address currency depreciation, while aligning with global shifts toward sustainable transport. The country’s government appears committed to fostering an economic environment that appeals to both local consumers and international investors, as it continues to navigate post-crisis recovery.
