Heartfelt Farewell: North Texas Icon KLTY’s Emotional Final Broadcast
After four decades of broadcasting, the cherished KLTY-FM (94.9) in North Texas has signed off for the final time. On its bittersweet final broadcast on Friday, the station welcomed back former hosts and employees to celebrate its storied legacy in Christian radio. The end came as a result of the Salem Media Group’s decision to sell KLTY, along with six other Christian music stations, to the Educational Music Foundation of Tennessee. This strategic move was intended to address long-term debt. The new owner plans to fill the 94.9 frequency with their own Christian station, K-LOVE.
During the nostalgic morning segment, host Bonnie Curry set the tone for the day by promising an emotional farewell filled with music, joy, and memories. “Guys, this is our see-you-later from 94.9 KLTY. It’s going to be a lot of music today. It’s going to be a lot of joy. It’s also going to be a lot of moments where you might hear us crying,” she shared with listeners.
KLTY, which began its journey in 1985, quickly became a beloved source of comfort and inspiration for many. One former owner, Marcos Rodriguez, reminisced about the station’s unlikely success, noting that the Christian format was largely unfamiliar at the time.
As the final day unfolded, the station’s Facebook page was inundated with heartfelt tributes from loyal listeners. One touching comment shared how KLTY provided solace during a personal loss, while another expressed gratitude for the support during life’s challenges. Christian artist Patrick Mayberry took to social media to express his appreciation for KLTY’s unwavering support for artists and its role in delivering messages of hope.
Ultimately, this farewell is not just an end but a testament to a station that touched countless lives, leaving a legacy that echoes beyond the airwaves.
