Shocking Escape: Infamous Myanmar Drug Queenpin Flees Mizoram Jail Twice, Finally Recaptured
Aizawl, Jan. 31: A fugitive drug queenpin from Myanmar, Lalchhanmawii C. Mawii, was successfully recaptured by the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) on January 29 and handed over to the Champhai Police. Mawii, a 44-year-old, and a resident of Khawmawi, Myanmar, had previously escaped from the Central Jail in Aizawl and the Champhai District Jail. This notorious escapee had first made headlines with a daring prison break from Aizawl’s Central Jail on November 30, 2023, alongside two female inmates. Convicted for possession of 59.54 grams of heroin under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, Mawii was initially tracked and re-arrested in 2024 after a district-wide manhunt.
Following another conviction for possession of 250 grams of heroin in May 2024, Mawii, along with an accomplice, managed another escape from Champhai District Jail in December 2024. Her persistent elusiveness prompted authorities to register fresh cases under Champhai PS and Vaivakawn Police Station. Additionally, Mawii faces multiple charges under various NDPS cases dating from 2018 to 2021.
The Mizoram Police and CYMA have commended the collaborative efforts of the Excise & Narcotics Department, Sub-Headquarters YMA, Champhai, and supportive groups from Myanmar for their tireless dedication in recapturing Mawii. Their efforts highlight a significant victory in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region. The high-profile capture underscores the complex challenges authorities face in curbing narcotic crimes while ensuring such fugitives face justice.
