Tragic Second Stampede at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj Claims Lives: Heartbreaking Loss and Urgent Safety Plea
In Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, another tragic stampede occurred at the Maha Kumbh event on Wednesday, claiming at least seven more lives at Jhusi, about 3 km from the Sangam. This second incident brought the total death toll to 37 following an earlier stampede at the Sangam. Kalpvasi police station Circle Officer, Rudra Kumar Singh, confirmed the deaths in Jhusi, attributing them to excessive crowd pressure. Despite the severity, the Yogi Adityanath government has not commented on this second tragedy, focusing only on the initial incident reported hours later.
The first official statement about the Sangam stampede came at 7 PM, revealing that 30 individuals had died between 1 AM and 2 AM. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and President Droupadi Murmu extended their condolences before the incident was formally acknowledged by the state government.
In response, the Uttar Pradesh government implemented safety measures, including revoking VVIP passes and limiting vehicle access to the venue. Criticism from the opposition has been strong, as they fault the administration for inadequate crowd management and event mishandling. The Maha Kumbh stampede is poised to dominate discussions in today’s parliamentary session.
