Heartbreaking Tragedy at Prayagraj Mahakumbh: Lives from Rajasthan Lost in Stampede
Two individuals from Rajasthan, Ajmer’s Nihali Devi (60) and Jaipur’s Nathulal Todawat (75), tragically lost their lives in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh festival in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred at the Sangam during the early hours when pilgrims were coming and going to take a sacred dip.
Nihali Devi and her husband, Ramnarayan Bairwa (65), were part of a 60-70 member group. Sanwar Lal, her 35-year-old son, shared with The Indian Express that his parents were leaving the ghat around 3 a.m. after their ritual bath when they encountered a surge of arriving devotees. This led to significant jostling, causing the group to split up. In the ensuing chaos, Nihali Devi fell and died instantly. Her husband managed to move her body aside and later placed it into an ambulance once the crowd dispersed. After the postmortem, her body was sent from Prayagraj at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, arriving at their village around 11 a.m. the following day.
This unfortunate event highlights the challenges and safety concerns at large religious gatherings, where massive crowds often lead to perilous situations. The tragedy has deeply affected the families involved and underscores the need for heightened management and safety measures at such significant events.
