Revitalizing Growth: Exciting Expansion Plans Unveiled at Indian Railways’ Trailblazing PPP Wagon Workshop in Vadlapudi
Arjun Kumar, a daily wage worker from Jharkhand, is gearing up for increased workload as the Indian Railways’ wagon repair workshop in Vadlapudi, Visakhapatnam, prepares for expansion. Specializing in gas cutting and welding for freight wagon repairs, Kumar earns Rs. 865 daily and has been working at the site for three years. The workshop, a unique Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project outsourced to Braithwaite & Co. Limited (BCL), covers 203 acres, with 93 acres currently in use. The workshop plans to enhance its capacity from servicing 2,400 wagons annually to handling up to 1,000 wagons monthly, aligning with the railways’ goal to boost freight movement due to its strategic location near ports.
Incorporating a Uni-flow repairing system, the workshop efficiently handles repairs without storing wagons onsite, using Rail-cum-Road Vehicles and an Automatic Stores Retrieval System for streamlined operations. This system allows for the periodic overhaul (POH) of over 200 wagons monthly, with a target of increasing freight and repair capacity significantly.
Since its first repaired wagon in October 2021, BCL has successfully overhauled 2,193 wagons by December 2024. Established on 25th April 2017, this Vadlapudi facility is part of Indian Railways’ network of 18 such workshops, collectively tasked with repairing approximately 69,000 wagons for the fiscal year 2024-25. With Indian Railways operating over 3 lakh freight wagons across a 68,000 km network hauling over 1.4 billion tonnes annually, the Vadlapudi workshop plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing India’s freight capabilities.
