State BJP Urgently Advocates for ILP in Sikkim: A Bold Step Towards Empowerment
State BJP Advocates for Inner Line Permit in Sikkim to Curb Illegal Influx
GANGTOK: On Wednesday, the State BJP expressed its support for the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government’s decision to implement a temporary work system at the Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU) level. This initiative aims to regulate and monitor the entry of external labor into Sikkim. State BJP executive Sangay Gyatso Bhutia commended the move, describing it as a positive step towards addressing the challenges of illegal influx.
While acknowledging existing legal frameworks like the Sikkim Tenants and Domestic and Professional Compulsory Verification Act, 2008, and the Sikkim Labour (Regulation of Employment and Condition of Service) Act, 2021, Bhutia noted their limited effectiveness in curbing illegal entries. He emphasized the critical threat posed to Sikkim’s demographic and cultural identity by unchecked migration, which continues to deplete local resources and disrupt the socio-cultural fabric of the state. This concern is amplified by the decreasing indigenous population due to low fertility rates.
Bhutia argued that although temporary measures are beneficial, they are inadequate in fully addressing this persistent issue. He strongly advocated for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), which he described as the only permanent solution. The ILP system, successfully utilized in other Northeastern states, offers a robust mechanism to regulate the influx of outsiders and protect indigenous populations and their rights.
The BJP remains committed to initiatives that safeguard Sikkim’s special constitutional status under Article 371F and protect the interests of its indigenous communities. Bhutia urged the state government to take decisive action by implementing the ILP system as a long-term measure to ensure Sikkim’s sustainable growth and protect its citizens. He called on the government to secure the future of the state by taking bold, decisive steps to address the issue of illegal immigration.
