Heartbreaking Injustice: Tribal Man’s Tragic Suicide in Mehsana Sparks Outrage Against Local Administration
A 45-year-old tribal man, Uda Damor, from Ranakpur in Kadana taluka of Mahisagar district, reportedly died by suicide on Tuesday. His family claims this was due to delays in obtaining an English-language caste certificate, crucial for his daughter’s recent employment with a Central government department. Allegations have been leveled against the local administration, with claims of bureaucratic hurdles that forced Uda to “run from pillar to post.”
Despite these allegations, the Mahisagar district administration stated that the application was submitted only 11 days prior, whereas the government allows 45 days for processing such documents. Uda, a former Gram Rakshak Dal member, was found hanging from a tree, with a note in his pocket blaming the administration. The police are currently verifying its authenticity as part of their investigation into potential administrative pressure leading to this tragic step.
Kanti Damor, Uda’s uncle, stated that while his niece already possessed a valid Gujarati caste certificate, the English version was mandated for her job in the Post Department. The application was reportedly hindered by demands for documentation dating back before 1960.
The family is refusing to accept Uda’s body until action is taken against responsible officers. Meanwhile, Mahisagar police are readying to transfer the body to a mortuary if needed. The internal inquiry by the district administration revealed that the application was received on January 17 but lacked specification regarding the language needed. It was also found that further documentation was required for one listed family member.
Senior officials argue the 11-day gap between the application and Uda’s death does not directly link the pending certificate to his suicide. Babu Gala Damor, a community leader, expressed that Uda was deeply worried about the potential impact on his daughter’s career due to the delay.
