Empowering Bodoland: A Call for Urgent Decentralization to Secure a Thriving Future
Kokrajhar, Assam, Jan 28: Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), highlighted the unique nature of the 2020 Bodo Peace Accord, noting its success in uniting various revolutionary groups. Speaking on the fifth anniversary of the accord, Boro emphasized that peace now prevails in Bodoland; however, its future depends on the continued support of both the state and Union governments. He stressed that firearms should only be in the hands of defense personnel and that the political and underground movements have been resolved after a decade-long effort.
Boro reflected on the history of conflict, acknowledging the challenges of bringing together groups with differing demands, such as statehood and autonomy. The BTC Chief credited the peaceful resolution to the commitment of all stakeholders, including the underground NDP, to end violence. Despite progress, Boro identified ongoing challenges such as the lack of major industries and infrastructure issues leading to youth migration. He revealed plans to publish a vision document by March 2025 addressing these demands to the Centre.
Boro mentioned funding constraints, with a significant gap in road improvement budgets, and expressed the desire for a Bodo regiment in the Indian Army, along with greater recruitment of Bodoland youth into paramilitary forces. Recruitment is happening, but numbers remain low. Boro emphasized the importance of power devolution and decentralization to prevent a resurgence of armed agitation, urging ongoing recognition of local aspirations. He concluded by acknowledging aspirations for full statehood, stressing the need to carefully assess such demands while striving for justified and peaceful resolutions.
