Supreme Court to Review Explosive Plea: Demand for Justice in Manipur CM N Biren Singh’s Leaked Audio Scandal
Controversy has surrounded the Manipur political landscape following leaked audio tapes purportedly capturing conversations with Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, allegedly revealing his involvement in inciting ethnic violence. The scandal has prompted the Kuki Organization for Human Rights Trust to file a petition with the Supreme Court, seeking a court-monitored investigation.
On January 28, 2025, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna signaled the possibility of advancing the hearing for this plea. Represented by advocate Prashant Bhushan, the petition calls for the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the leaked recordings. Advocate Bhushan pressed for an urgent hearing, emphasizing adherence to the court’s orders from November 11, 2024, to present evidence, including the audio clips. However, CJI Khanna advised Bhushan to submit a formal written application, stating, “We will examine. Please give a request in writing. In case of extreme urgency, we will advance the hearing.”
The whistleblower-leaked tapes supposedly feature Chief Minister Singh encouraging violence, contributing to the ongoing tensions in Manipur. Initially set for February 7, 2025, the hearing date may be advanced due to claims of continuous harassment against the petitioners.
In a November 2024 session, Attorney General R. Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta advocated against the Supreme Court’s involvement, suggesting Prashant Bhushan should have approached the Manipur High Court instead of directly petitioning the Supreme Court.
As the case unfolds, the leaked audio tapes remain central to understanding the origins of ethnic discord in Manipur and the political figures entangled in the allegations. The Supreme Court now faces the task of determining whether an expedited hearing is warranted amid the allegations and ongoing community unrest.
