Triumphant Breakthrough: United NDA Paves Way for BJP’s Victory with Waqf Bill
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, buoyed by recent NDA-led amendments, appears set for a smoother passage through Parliament following approval from the Joint Committee on Monday. This marks a shift from last year when key NDA allies like JD(U), LJP (Ram Vilas), and TDP had adopted a neutral stance, seeking consideration of concerns from Muslim organizations and questioning other government initiatives.
Now united, the NDA bloc, including JD(U), TDP, and LJP (Ram Vilas), voted in favor of the amendments. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju played a crucial role in fostering this unity, emphasizing collaboration during a strategic meeting at his residence ahead of the voting.
The BJP, currently holding 240 seats and short of a majority in the Lok Sabha, sees the collective support from its allies—comprising 16 TDP, 12 JD(U), and five LJP (Ram Vilas) members—as vital. Contributions from smaller allies like RLD, JDS, and Apna Dal (S) may also prove pivotal when the Bill is presented in the House for voting.
The Joint Committee’s final meeting is slated for Wednesday, focusing on reviewing and adopting the draft report on the Bill, scheduled for presentation during the initial phase of the Budget Session. While the Opposition is expected to file dissent notes, these will be included in the report to reflect varying perspectives.
The Committee has met 37 times since August last year, with the impending 38th meeting marking the culmination of extensive deliberations. This development underscores a significant political alignment within the NDA, promising implications for the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in its revised form.
