Thrilling Showdown: Mind Games Lead to Dramatic Draw Between Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa at Tata Steel Chess
In the eighth round of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands, Indian Grandmasters D Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa played to a strategic draw after 33 moves. This much-anticipated clash featured two of India’s top players and saw Praggnanandhaa, with the white pieces, initiating the game with the common 1.e4 move after a brief psychological pause. Gukesh responded with the Berlin Defense, and the game transitioned into an Anti-Berlin setup after 4.d3.
Both players began strongly by exchanging familiar opening moves, which led to a standard position. The game briefly intensified on the 23rd move when Gukesh advanced a pawn (23… a3), which was later identified as an imprecise move by analysis engines. Despite a series of captures that removed both queens and significant material from the board, the game concluded in a draw with each side holding a rook, six pawns, and a minor piece—Gukesh with a bishop and Praggnanandhaa with a knight. Realizing no clear path to victory, both players settled for a draw to conserve energy.
The round, preceding the tournament’s second rest day, saw all five Indian competitors in the masters section, including top-ranked player Arjun Erigaisi, settling for draws. Erigaisi, playing as white, ended his game against Serbian GM Alexey Sarana after just 23 moves. Despite beginning the tournament with a stronger rating, Erigaisi has struggled, now on a 21-game winless streak in the Masters section after a successful run in the challengers section in 2022.
Elsewhere, Pentala Harikrishna split points with Anish Giri, and Leon Luke Mendonca, also winless thus far, accepted a draw against Dutch player Jorden Van Foreest. The standings remain tight with Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, and Uzbek star Nodirbek Abdusattarov sharing the lead.
