Tragic Loss: Brave Peacekeepers Sacrificed Amid Fierce Battles in Eastern Congo’s Crucial Hub
In eastern Congo, a surge in conflict with M23 rebels has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 peacekeepers and foreign soldiers, according to United Nations and Congolese army officials. Recent territorial advances by M23 have led to the encirclement of Goma, a city of about 2 million people, posing significant risks to regional security and humanitarian efforts. In response to the escalating violence, the U.N. Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting for Sunday at 10 am EST, after a request from the Congolese government.
On Saturday, Congo’s army, with support from U.N. forces and the Southern African Development Community Mission (SAMIDRC), repelled a rebel attack aimed at Goma. Amnesty International US has expressed concerns that M23, allegedly backed by Rwanda, is exploiting the U.S. presidential transition to further their agenda, thereby endangering civilians.
Rwanda, accused by Congo, the U.S., and U.N. experts of supporting M23, denies these charges but maintains that its military presence in eastern Congo is for security reasons. U.N. experts report that up to 4,000 Rwandan troops may be in the region.
The death toll includes two South African peacekeepers, a Uruguayan Blue Helmet, and three Malawian peacekeepers, alongside seven South African soldiers from SAMIDRC in recent clashes. Uruguayan soldier Rodolfo Álvarez was named among the fallen, with his unit focused on the U.N. mandate and civilian evacuations from Goma. Four Uruguayan peacekeepers were injured, with one evacuated to Uganda for medical care.
Congo’s government, with allies like SAMIDRC and MONUSCO, which has been active in the region for over 20 years, continues efforts to counter M23’s advance. South Africa’s defense minister was present in Congo when the recent casualties occurred, underscoring the international commitment to peacekeeping in this volatile region.
