Skyrocketing Taxi Fares at Naharlagun Railway Station Spark Outrage Among Passengers
Exorbitant Taxi Fares at Naharlagun Railway Station Spur Passenger Outcry
ITANAGAR, 25 Jan: Passengers and tourists arriving at Naharlagun railway station are expressing significant dissatisfaction with the high taxi fares, which many claim are unaffordable and present substantial transportation obstacles. The fare from the station to Naharlagun reportedly stands at Rs 400, while trips to Nirjuli cost Rs 800, and journeys to Itanagar range from Rs 900 to Rs 1,500. These rates often exceed the cost of train tickets, leaving travelers, especially those without personal vehicles, with few alternatives.
In conversations with taxi drivers, it was revealed that most operate private vehicles instead of commercial ones. Drivers frequently originate from distant areas like Itanagar and cite inadequate tourist numbers as a reason for high fares. They explain that the limited daily passenger intake necessitates higher pricing to sustain their livelihood. Nonetheless, passengers counter that such fares are unjustifiable and impose a heavy financial burden on those relying on station transportation.
The predicament is compounded by a scarcity of viable transportation options. Passengers report only one or two often-overcrowded buses available at the station, with autorickshaws being equally scarce, making taxis the primary option. This situation leaves travelers, particularly those journeying alone, in a difficult position.
Some passengers have further criticized the behavior of drivers, who they claim are inflexible with pricing and unwilling to accommodate passengers’ financial situations. One passenger expressed frustration over having to pay Rs 1,500 to reach Itanagar, exceeding the train fare, and a student lamented the lack of affordable transport options, stressing the need for an organized system.
The consistent grievances highlight the urgent call for a regulated transport system at Naharlagun railway station. Passengers hope for the introduction of a transport authority to oversee fair pricing and the provision of alternative transport options like shuttle buses to alleviate the current strain on travelers and promote regional development.
