Transformative Success: Empowering Nagaland with Cutting-Edge Remote Sensing & GIS Training for Thriving Water-Land Management
The North Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management (NERIWALM), located in Tezpur, Assam, conducted a specialized three-day training program titled ‘Remote Sensing and GIS Application in Water and Land Management.’ This event took place at the Conference Hall of the Chief Engineer’s Office, Water Resources Department (WRD), in Kohima on January 22. The training aimed to empower participants by enhancing their know-how and capabilities in remote sensing, GIS applications, water conservation, and management.
At the opening ceremony, Chief Engineer of WRD, Er. K Hutoi Sema, highlighted the critical importance of efficient water and land management for the region of Nagaland, where rivers and fertile lands constitute essential natural resources. He praised NERIWALM for its sustained initiatives to bolster competencies in these areas throughout Northeast India. Sema underscored how remote sensing and GIS technologies can be pivotal in gaining in-depth insights into local water and land resources, presenting tangible solutions to water management challenges.
A significant focus of the program was also on water conservation, an imperative objective as the region frequently experiences droughts. The training sought to impart crucial practices that can aid in preserving these vital resources.
Sema encouraged all attendees to engage wholeheartedly with the training sessions, glean insights from seasoned experts, and subsequently implement this knowledge within their respective domains.
In a related presentation, Er. Sobu Angami, a Senior Engineer (S.E.-I), outlined the various activities spearheaded by the Water Resources Department in Nagaland. He highlighted significant projects, including the Shiyong micro-irrigation initiative at Aliba village in Mokokchung, the Shemmei MI project in Longleng, and the Dhansiri MI project in Dimapur. He also shed light on the development of a flood forecasting model and rainwater harvesting projects in Kohima, emphasizing the department’s proactive stance in addressing the region’s water management needs.
