Unlock the Secrets of Water Management: Transformative GIS & Remote Sensing Training
A three-day specialized training program on remote sensing and GIS applications for water and land management kicked off at the Chief Engineer’s office of the Water Resources Department in Kohima, Nagaland, on Wednesday. The North Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management (NERIWALM) from Tezpur organizes this initiative to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills in leveraging these technologies for water conservation and management.
At the inaugural session, Chief Engineer K Hutoi Sema highlighted the critical need for effective water and land management in Nagaland, where natural resources such as rivers and fertile lands are vital. He applauded NERIWALM’s continuous dedication to advancing skillsets in Northeast India. Sema noted that the training would focus on employing remote sensing and GIS tools to better understand the region’s water and land resources, thus providing innovative solutions to ongoing water management challenges.
The program also addressed the importance of water conservation, especially in drought-prone areas, urging participants to actively engage and apply their newfound expertise in their respective divisions. Sema remarked, “Good management, whether of land, water, or people, often comes down to common sense and timely action.”
Further, Senior Engineer Sobu Angami showcased a PowerPoint presentation detailing the activities of the Nagaland Water Resources Department. Simultaneously, Dr. Luna Moni Das, an Assistant Professor at NERIWALM, discussed the institute’s significant contributions to research, training, and policy formulation in water and land management. She emphasized their role in conducting both international and national workshops and seminars, marking this training as a vital step toward achieving sustainable development goals in the region.
This engaging and informative program signifies a proactive move towards effective water and land management, promising to equip participants with practical skills to tackle the ecological challenges facing Nagaland.
