Fiery Backlash: Assam Congress Chief Bhupen Borah Condemns Police Clampdown on Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Indian State’ Remark
Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah has criticized the recent FIR filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his comments at the ‘Indira Bhavan’ inauguration. The complaint, lodged in Assam’s Pan Bazar Police Station, claims Gandhi’s remark about the “Indian state” threatens national sovereignty and unity, according to ANI reports. Monjit Chetia, the complainant, alleges that Gandhi’s statement intends to incite rebellion and undermines the state’s authority, characterizing it as inciting subversive activities and fostering separatist sentiments.
Borah condemned the Assam Police’s action, accusing them of being influenced by the BJP, pointing out that the case against Gandhi is solely based on his speech. He highlighted the police’s selective approach, noting no action was taken against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma despite complaints over communal speeches. Borah also questioned the neutrality of agencies like the CBI and ED, alleging their inaction on the Saradha chit fund scam involving Sarma.
Chetia’s complaint further asserts that Gandhi’s remarks stem from frustration over repeated electoral losses, accusing him of inciting disaffection against the central government and the Indian state. The case is filed under Sections 152 and 197(1)d of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which address actions that might endanger the nation’s integrity. Chetia emphasized that as Leader of the Opposition, Gandhi is expected to uphold democratic values rather than spread misinformation and provoke unrest.
Borah’s criticism reflects broader concerns about the perceived bias in law enforcement and investigative agencies, highlighting the political undercurrents surrounding Gandhi’s case. The situation underlines the contentious political climate and accusations of double standards in handling free speech and accountability.
