Vijender Singh Champions Personal Coaches for Athletes at Paris Olympics: A Bold Step Towards Glory

The debate over the necessity of personal coaches alongside federation-appointed national coaches has come to the fore, with Olympic medal-winning boxer-turned-politician Vijender Singh voicing his strong support for athletes’ autonomy in choosing their support staff.

As the Paris Olympics got underway on Friday, many Indian athletes arrived with their personal coaches, despite the official presence of national coaches. This scenario has led to discussions on whether such arrangements are crucial for optimal performance.

Singh, a notable figure in both Indian sports and politics, stresses the importance of personalized coaching. Recalling his own career, the 38-year-old Haryana boxer, who won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, highlighted the freedom he had in selecting his coaches and sparring partners. “It made a significant difference in our performance,” he asserted.

Transitioning from amateur to professional boxing, Singh underscored the impact the right support staff had on his success. “Authorities would provide what we needed but expected results, and we delivered,” he said, referencing his competitive achievements from 2006 to 2012. Singh firmly believes that athletes’ preferences in training camps should be honored.

The Indian Olympic contingent in Paris includes 140 support personnel, with 72 financed by the Indian government, mostly comprising the personal coaches athletes requested.

Singh also pointed out the role of social media in contemporary sports. “Today, athletes benefit from improved facilities and the instant connectivity offered by the internet,” he noted. Social media empowers athletes to share their concerns and garner support, a luxury Singh didn’t have during his prime. “Social media is a powerful tool that provides a platform for athletes to voice their struggles and receive acknowledgment,” he said.

In summary, Singh’s advocacy for personal coaching highlights a broader perspective on athlete preparation and the evolving dynamics facilitated by social media in modern sports.
