Shocking Verdict: Pakistan’s Ex-PM Imran Khan & Wife Bushra Bibi Jailed in High-Profile Corruption Case
ISLAMABAD: In a notable development, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, along with his wife Bushra Bibi, received a significant legal setback. On Friday, both were convicted in the high-profile £190 million Al-Qadir University Project Trust case. Imran Khan was handed a 14-year prison sentence, while Bushra Bibi faced a seven-year jail term, with both subjected to financial penalties—Rs 1 million for Khan and Rs 500,000 for Bushra. The ruling, pronounced by Judge Nasir Javed Rana, emerged after multiple postponements and was held within a makeshift courtroom at Adiala Jail amidst heightened security.
Bushra Bibi’s arrest promptly followed the courtroom verdict, reflecting the case’s gravity. The couple had been formally charged on February 27, 2024, soon after Pakistan’s general elections. Allegations suggest that they accrued vast sums and land benefits from Bahria Town Ltd. to facilitate the legalization of Rs 50 billion, which had been identified and returned to Pakistan by the UK during Khan’s prior administration, according to Dawn.
Originally, the verdict was intended for December 23 but faced delays due to winter holidays and other logistical challenges. Specifically, Judge Nasir Javed Rana’s leave and Khan and Bushra’s courtroom absence contributed to additional postponements.
Imran Khan has been detained since August 2023 amid various legal challenges, which he attributes to political motivations. Despite previous acquittals in the cipher and Iddat cases last year, he now confronts new charges in the Toshakhana 2 case. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan expressed hopes for justice amid claims of two years of perceived injustice.
This case continues to captivate public interest given its implications for Pakistan’s political landscape and legal integrity. (IANS)
