Empowering Mizoram’s Future: Free Life-Saving HPV Vaccinations for Young Girls Aged 9-14
Mizoram has been selected for a significant public health initiative involving the administration of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, aimed at curbing cervical cancer in young girls. According to an official from the State Health and Family Welfare Department, the vaccine will be offered for free to girls aged 9 to 14. This effort underscores the state’s commitment to preventive healthcare and reducing future cervical cancer cases.
Dr. Lalmuanawma Jongte, Joint Director of the Extended Programme on Immunization (EPI) and State Immunization Officer, announced that the Mizoram Health and Family Welfare Department is set to launch the vaccination drive. Preparations are underway to ensure a smooth rollout, with a list of over 75,000 eligible girls compiled from schools across Mizoram. The department is also extending its efforts to reach out to girls not currently attending school, demonstrating an inclusive approach to public health.
In a noteworthy move to ensure comprehensive coverage, there are plans to include female refugees within the specified age group in the vaccination program. This inclusion highlights the state’s commitment to health equity and community well-being. The lists detailing the eligible girls have already been submitted to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, indicating the program’s advancement to the next operational stage.
This initiative marks a proactive step in Mizoram’s public health strategy, aligning with broader efforts to enhance population health outcomes and provide equitable access to essential immunizations.
