Lockheed Martin is nearing an agreement to integrate the advanced AGM-158C Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) into these aircraft. Developed by DARPA for the U.S. Air Force and Navy, the stealthy LRASM is set to supersede current capabilities, including the existing Harpoon anti-ship missile, by offering more sophisticated autonomous targeting options.
The LRASM, derived from the AGM-158B JASSM-ER, can strike targets approximately 600 miles away and is currently limited to deployment from the Navy’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and Air Force B-1 bombers. On January 8, the US Navy’s NAVAIR announced its intention to negotiate an exclusive contract with Lockheed Martin to install the LRASM C-1 variant on the F-15E and F-15EX. These jets are renowned for their considerable payload capacity, capable of carrying numerous AGM-158C missiles, thus enhancing their maritime threat targeting efficacy.
The F-15E, operational since the 1980s, has demonstrated its prowess in numerous conflicts and has been further developed into the advanced F-15EX Eagle II.
