Breaking: Outrage as Dhanani and 40 Congress Activists Dramatically Detained Amid Protest Against Police Action on Amreli Woman
Former Amreli MLA Paresh Dhanani, along with 40 Congress leaders and workers, was detained on their way to stage a protest at Mangadh Chowk in Surat. The protest was aimed at demanding action against police officers who allegedly paraded a woman accused in a case involving a forged letter. This action has angered the Congress party, which last week initiated the ‘Nari Swabhiman Andolan’ in Amreli, advocating for women’s dignity and justice.
On the day of their detainment, the Congress leaders, including Dhanani, Pratap Dudhat, and Virji Thummar, paid tribute to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel statue in Varachha before heading towards their protest site. They were intercepted and taken to Hazira police station, about 17 km away from their planned destination. The detainees held a sit-in at the police station until their release later the same day.
In a subsequent press conference, Dhanani emphasized their aim for justice and peace, criticizing the police’s denial of permission for the protest in Varachha. He questioned the decision to accuse the woman, who was merely executing duties under a BJP leader’s direction by writing and sending a letter. Dhanani also alleged that the state home minister, Harsh Sanghavi, discreetly advised the Amreli Superintendent of Police to take action, leading to the arrest of the accused, including the Patidar woman.
This incident highlights the political tensions surrounding the alleged mishandling of an accused individual and underscores the Congress party’s stance on protecting women’s rights and autonomy.
