A 10-month-old child in Assam has been diagnosed with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), marking the first recorded case in the state, health officials confirmed. Dhruv Jyoti Bhuiyan, Superintendent of Assam Medical College and Hospital, reported that routine tests revealed the infection, but assured that the child is in good health despite initial symptoms like coughing. HMPV was first identified in 2001 and is known to affect the respiratory system.
Recently, the Gujarat Health Minister, Rushikesh Patel, confirmed the virus’s presence in the state and stated that the government has issued an advisory. Patel highlighted that HMPV is one among various viruses impacting respiratory health and continues to be monitored.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently noted an uptick in acute respiratory infections, including HMPV, across the Northern Hemisphere, aligning with typical seasonal trends. WHO clarified that such trends are not unusual, often caused by common respiratory pathogens like seasonal influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and mycoplasma pneumonia. These concurrent respiratory infections during winter can place an increased burden on healthcare systems.
