On Friday, President Droupadi Murmu awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumously to Captain Anshuman Singh, who perished in Siachen in July of the previous year. The award was accepted by his mother, Manju Singh, and his wife, Smriti. President Murmu made the announcement on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). “President Droupadi Murmu conferred Kirti Chakra upon Captain Anshuman Singh, The Army Medical Corps, 26th Battalion The Punjab Regiment, posthumously. Disregarding his own safety, he exhibited exceptional bravery and resolve to rescue many people in a major fire incident,” the post read.

The viral announcement featured an emotional video of Captain Singh’s widow, Smriti, recounting their relationship. She nostalgically remembered Singh’s declaration, “I would die with the brass on my chest. I would not die an ordinary death.” Smriti, recalling their first meeting on the opening day of their college, poignantly described it as “love at first sight.” Their relationship persevered through long-distance for eight years after Singh got selected for the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC).

Captain Singh was posted to Siachen just two months into their marriage. Smriti recounted their final conversation on July 18, discussing future aspirations, unaware it would be their last. Singh died a day later, on July 19, in a valiant firefighting effort at an Indian Army ammunition dump in Siachen Glacier.

The fire, which started at 3 a.m. in a fibreglass hut, prompted Singh to rush in and rescue trapped personnel. He saved four to five individuals but ultimately became trapped and succumbed to his injuries. Captain Singh was laid to rest with full state honors in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, on July 22. Smriti expressed her pride, noting, “He has given all his life to save other families, his army family.”

Captain Anshuman Singh’s heroism epitomizes selfless service, earning him the nation’s second-highest gallantry award, the Kirti Chakra.
