Minor Hurt in Intense Clash: BSF Battles Locals in High-Stakes Anti-Smuggling Operation in Tripura’s Sepahijala
In Rahimpur village, Tripura’s Sepahijala district, tensions flared when a clash erupted between the Border Security Force (BSF) and locals, leaving a 17-year-old boy, Shafiul Islam, injured. During an anti-smuggling operation, BSF personnel reportedly fired rubber bullets, and Islam was subsequently taken to Tripura Medical College in Agartala for treatment.
The altercation began amidst an effort by BSF forces to curb cross-border smuggling. According to BSF sources, the personnel used force to disperse a gathering allegedly assisting smugglers. They cited escalating aggression from the crowd, including stone-pelting, as justification for their actions. However, local residents strongly contested this narrative, accusing two BSF soldiers, allegedly intoxicated, of instigating the confrontation during a Muslim community religious event.
Eyewitnesses claim the soldiers attacked without provocation, damaging property, including shops and motorcycles. Furthermore, residents alleged unlawful entry into the home of local man, Dhan Miah, where his daughter, Nasiam Akhter, was injured while trying to protect him.
In response to the incident, Kalamchoura police launched an investigation. Local voices have grown louder, expressing concerns over frequent alleged abuses by BSF personnel. Meanwhile, the BSF has refuted these allegations, asserting that their actions were part of a legitimate anti-smuggling drive. In an official statement, they described Rahimpur as a hub for smuggling activity, accusing those injured of active participation in illegal actions against BSF.
The BSF decried what they referred to as “false narratives,” arguing that such misinformation risks emboldening criminal elements while undermining the security forces’ morale. As investigations continue, the community remains on edge, calling into question the balance between national security efforts and the rights of local populations.
