In a recent development, five infants in India have tested positive for the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), marking the first reported cases of this respiratory virus in the country. The infections were detected in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat, sparking concern among the public. However, Union Health Minister JP Nadda has assured that there is no cause for alarm as the government is closely monitoring the situation.
HMPV, a globally recognized respiratory virus, recently came into focus following an outbreak in China. It is known to cause respiratory infections across all age groups and spreads primarily during the winter and early spring months. Despite the emerging cases in India, no surge in common respiratory virus pathogens has been observed in the country.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) identified two cases in Karnataka through routine surveillance. Both patients, a three-month-old girl and an eight-month-old boy hospitalized with bronchopneumonia, have shown signs of recovery. Additionally, two children in Tamil Nadu and a two-month-old boy from Dungarpur in Rajasthan, hospitalized in Ahmedabad, have tested positive.
Health authorities across affected states, including Karnataka, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, have reassured the public that the situation is under control. Meanwhile, the Delhi government has instructed hospitals to prepare for a potential increase in respiratory illnesses. Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged swift action to prevent a health crisis.
The World Health Organization is monitoring the global HMPV situation, and the Indian Health Ministry, alongside the ICMR and National Centre for Disease Control, are vigilantly observing developments in China and neighboring countries. In a recent review meeting led by the Director-General of Health Services, it was established that India’s health systems and surveillance networks are well-equipped to respond to emerging health challenges.
Minister Nadda emphasized that HMPV is not a new virus, having been identified in 2001, and is widespread globally. He reiterated that the public should remain calm as the government continues its vigilant monitoring and preparedness efforts.
