Meghalaya’s Fierce Fight: Conquering 4,500 Active TB Cases for Healthier, TB-Free Villages
Meghalaya Tackles Tuberculosis with New Initiatives
Shillong: Meghalaya is currently managing around 4,500 active tuberculosis (TB) cases, a number that is subject to change, according to Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh. Despite facing challenges, the state has achieved a commendable treatment success rate nearing 87%, but still contends with a relatively high fatality rate of 10-13%. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates indicate that Meghalaya’s total TB caseload might range from 5,500 to 6,000.
Significantly, the state has established facilities to test for multi-drug-resistant (MDR) TB, a crucial step in managing the disease. Minister Lyngdoh also emphasized the occurrence of extra-pulmonary TB, which affects areas beyond the lungs.
In an effort to address this public health issue, the government launched the 100-Day Campaign #NiKshayShivir 2024 and the Meghalaya Comprehensive TB Care Programme, supported by a budget of Rs 50-70 lakh. This initiative aims to reduce TB mortality and morbidity by involving community influencers, sensitizing elected representatives and religious groups, and mobilizing vulnerable populations. Over 2,130 villages are being prepared for TB-free certification as part of the campaign.
Minister Lyngdoh expressed optimism that the campaign will significantly contribute to achieving a decrease in TB-related deaths and health complications. The comprehensive approach underscores Meghalaya’s commitment to combating this challenging health concern and improving public health infrastructure.
