Desperate Battle for Survival: Emotional Rescue Mission for 10 Miners Trapped in Flooded Assam Coal Mine
In the remote Umrangso area of Assam’s Dima Hasao district, rescue efforts are in motion after miners became trapped in a flooded coal mine. According to local reports, the mine has filled with around 100 feet of water, potentially endangering over 20 miners inside. Initial assessments by District Magistrate Simanta Das suggest that between four to six individuals remain trapped, though the exact count is uncertain due to complications.
The situation is dire given the challenging location, a seven-hour journey from Haflong district headquarters. The mine’s group leader, responsible for maintaining the list of workers, has fled, further complicating efforts to identify those trapped. The Assam Mines and Minerals Department is spearheading the rescue mission, which enlists the expertise of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). There is also a possibility of engaging the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) if the situation escalates.
Rescue operations are scheduled to commence on Tuesday morning as authorities strive to navigate the logistical challenges posed by the remote location and determine the flooding’s cause. This crisis underscores the urgency and risks faced by those in Assam’s mining industry.
The incident highlights a critical situation in a region already grappling with challenging terrain and inadequate infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of swift and coordinated rescue efforts.
