Heartwarming Initiative: Drive to Provide Free Rice to Mizoram Refugees Triumphs | Guwahati News
In the South Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, which shares borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, local authorities have successfully distributed free rice to refugees from these neighboring countries. Each refugee received 31.5 kg of rice, according to officials who reported the completion of the distribution on Wednesday. In total, 2,526 quintals of rice were provided to 8,020 refugees, including 5,922 from Myanmar’s Chin state and 2,014 from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts. Notably, the Bangladeshi refugees are being accommodated solely within Lawngtlai district. The initiative was launched by Deputy Commissioner Cheemala Siva Gopal Reddy on November 11. Due to the district’s extensive size, challenging terrain, and limited access to many villages by foot or boat, the distribution was time-consuming. Meanwhile, in the Champhai district, which also shares a border with Myanmar, the distribution of free rice has been completed for 14,390 refugees from Myanmar and internally displaced persons from Manipur. This humanitarian effort underscores the logistical challenges faced by local administrations in providing essential support to displaced populations amidst geographical and infrastructural constraints.
