Empowering Heritage: Arunachal Pradesh’s Inspiring Launch of University’s Cultural Renaissance
The government of Arunachal Pradesh has unveiled a proposal to establish a university-level institute focused on promoting, documenting, researching, and educating others about indigenous cultures, faiths, and languages. This initiative, announced by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, is in collaboration with the International Centre for Cultural Studies (ICCS), a renowned non-profit organization. Currently, ICCS operates a center named RI-WATCH in Roing, Lower Dibang Valley, which concentrates on Idu Mishmi culture and language preservation.
The idea for the new university was conceived during a dialogue between Chief Minister Khandu and ICCS founder Prof Yashwant Pathak at the silver jubilee celebration of the Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFC-SAP). The aim is to strengthen the indigenous culture movement and project the state’s unique heritage on an international platform. Although the proposal is in its nascent stages, the Chief Minister expressed confidence that it will materialize in the coming years with the support of ICCS.
Chief Minister Khandu also urged followers of the Donyi-Polo faith to actively practice their beliefs, stressing the importance of action over words. He highlighted the crucial role of IFC-SAP in preserving the indigenous culture of the state and suggested that the organization conduct brainstorming sessions with all stakeholders to address the issues of cultural and religious erosion.
The Nyedar Namlo dedication event saw the attendance of several dignitaries, including Indigenous Affairs Minister Mama Natung, IFC-SAP President Dr. Emi Rumi, and other prominent leaders. Kaling Borang, chief advisor to Donyi Polo Yelam Kebang, contributed as a resource person for the occasion. The proposed institute represents a significant step towards preserving and celebrating the rich cultural tapestry of Arunachal Pradesh.
