Assam’s Heartfelt Tribute: State Mourns for 7 Days to Honor Beloved Ex-PM Manmohan Singh
Guwahati: The Assam government has announced a seven-day state mourning period in honor of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, as declared by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The period of mourning will commence on December 26, 2024, and conclude on January 1, 2025. During this time, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across all state government establishments, and all official entertainment events will be canceled.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away in Delhi at the age of 92, is celebrated as the architect of India’s economic reforms, serving as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. Notably, he represented Assam in the Rajya Sabha for five consecutive terms from 1991 to 2019. His residence in Guwahati was a ground-floor apartment rented from former Assam Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia, located in the Sarumotoria area.
Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly and son of Hiteswar Saikia, expressed profound grief and is traveling to Delhi to pay his respects. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other political figures across Assam have also conveyed their condolences on the passing of this esteemed leader.
The declaration of state mourning reflects the profound impact Dr. Singh had on the state of Assam and the nation as a whole, honoring his contributions and legacy.
