Heartfelt Tribute: PM Modi, Amit Shah, and Leaders Honor Manmohan Singh with Respectful Remembrance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his final respects to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Singh’s residence in Delhi, following Singh’s passing at 92 due to age-related ailments. Modi extended his condolences to Singh’s family. Key political figures, including Union Ministers Amit Shah and JP Nadda, as well as Congress leaders like KC Venugopal, also visited to honor Singh.
Manmohan Singh had recently been admitted to AIIMS Delhi after falling unconscious at home. Renowned for his pivotal role in India’s economic reform, Singh’s passing has evoked an outpouring of grief from numerous political leaders. His tenure as India’s 13th Prime Minister, from 2004 to 2014, marked him as the country’s longest-serving PM after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
Singh’s most notable achievement was his leadership during the 1991 economic liberalisation, where as Finance Minister under PV Narasimha Rao, he spearheaded reforms that increased foreign investment and decreased governmental control, thereby accelerating India’s economic growth. His government launched the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and the Right to Information Act, both pivotal in increasing transparency and social welfare.
His resting place, the All India Congress Committee headquarters in Delhi, will hold Singh’s remains for public viewing from 8:00 to 10:00 am on Saturday, after which prominent leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, will partake in the final rites at Rajghat, a traditional cremation site for Prime Ministers.
Having retired earlier this year from the Rajya Sabha after 33 years of service, Singh’s legacy continues to influence India’s political and economic framework. Recalling his impact, Prime Minister Modi described Singh as one of India’s most esteemed leaders, whose transformative policies have left an indelible mark on the nation. Singh, born on September 26, 1932, is celebrated for his enduring contributions to India’s development trajectory.
