Guwahati Municipal Corporation’s Garbage Stations Stir Health and Traffic Concerns

Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) operates four garbage transfer stations across the city, located in Manik Nagar on RG Baruah Road, Chabipool Bilpar, Patharquarry on VIP Road, and Bhangagarh. Residents and commuters have expressed growing concern over these sites due to unsanitary conditions and overpowering stench. Megha Nidhi Dahal, the GMC Commissioner, admitted on Wednesday that the current transfer stations are inefficiently located and poorly managed. "These stations are functioning unscientifically. While we use specialized bio formulas and bleaching powders to reduce the odor, it proves ineffective, especially during summers," Dahal stated.

To tackle these issues, GMC is constructing four new garbage transfer stations in Fancy Bazar, Adabari, Panjabari, and Mathgharia, each capable of processing 150 tonnes of garbage daily with scientific waste segregation. Dahal announced that the stations in Adabari and Fancy Bazar would be operational by the end of the year.

In particular, residents and businesses in the Chabipool Bilpar area have voiced their frustration with the intolerable stench. Sabari Dutta, a senior citizen in the area, lamented that the foul smell forces them to keep their windows shut in the mornings. Moreover, the garbage trucks cause traffic congestion and sometimes dump waste in the nearby beel.

Similar waste management challenges are also emerging in South Delhi, where the MCD is facing a crisis due to impending service cessation by the garbage collection agency. Furthermore, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant of Goa has announced stringent penalties for illegal garbage dumping, including the revocation of vehicle permits. In the Kalyan-Dombivli area, Municipal Commissioner Indurani Jakhar is taking steps to alleviate traffic issues and remove unauthorized hawkers near the railway station.

The GMC’s initiatives symbolize a crucial step towards addressing Guwahati’s waste management issues, promising improved hygiene and better living conditions once operational.
