In Nigeria, the number of fatalities resulting from stampedes at two Christmas charity events has escalated from 13 to 32, according to police reports on Monday. Among the deceased were at least four children who were caught in crowd surges as people scrambled for food during a dire cost-of-living crisis, the worst the country has seen in a generation.
The more tragic of the two incidents occurred in Okija town, located in the southeastern state of Anambra, where a local philanthropist had organized a food distribution on Saturday. This event led to the deaths of 22 people, confirmed Tochukwu Ikenga, a spokesman for the local police. Meanwhile, the second incident in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, claimed ten lives during a charity event organized by a church.
In response to these tragedies, authorities have launched investigations into both incidents, occurring just days after another separate stampede in the country saw several children tragically lose their lives.
With Nigeria being Africa’s most populous nation, there has been an increasing trend of philanthropy as local organizations, churches, and individuals step up to host charity events.
