Exposing Shocking Corruption: Furious Locals Demand Urgent Reform in Assam’s Boko Brick Industries
Boko’s brick industries are facing intense scrutiny for repeated violations, including severe environmental pollution and non-compliance with government regulations. Following the monsoon season, brick production resumed, drawing criticism due to its adverse effects on local communities.
In Neuldoba village, under the Chamaria Revenue Circle, residents have reported suffering from severe air pollution caused by the JBI Brick Industry. “During the day, it’s less noticeable, but at night, breathing is difficult due to the smoke, which also disrupts our daily activities,” said a villager who wished to remain anonymous.
According to the Pollution Control Board of Assam (PCBA), brick kilns must adopt eco-friendly technologies, such as zig-zag or vertical shaft designs, to reduce pollution. However, JBI Brick Industry has blatantly ignored these regulations by obstructing the Mora Kolohi River for brick production. They have also placed their plant within the restricted 500-meter range of natural water bodies, which harms the local aquatic ecosystem and wildlife.
In addition to environmental violations, the industry has failed to adhere to guidelines that require brick kilns to be at least 500 meters away from RCC bridges, schools, and residential areas. JBI operates perilously close to an RCC bridge, two government schools, a mosque, and over 100 families, all within the restricted zone.
Efforts to contact PCBA officials were unsuccessful. However, Nandan Nilotpal Bhagawati, Officer of Chamaria Revenue Circle, has encouraged villagers to file complaints at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Amingaon for further action.
The JBI Brick Industry is also accused of employing child labor, a breach of law which will be investigated by Chaygaon Labour Inspector Pinki Dhar with police assistance.
Despite PCBA’s August 17, 2024, meeting on eco-friendly practices, violations continue. Local residents demand stringent action against JBI for flouting environmental laws and public health standards, calling for urgent administrative intervention to restore ecological balance and protect affected communities.
