Assam Congress Chief Bhupen Borah’s Passionate Plea to Himanta Biswa Sarma: Seeking Justice for Tragic Loss of Party Worker

December 21, 2024 2 Min Read

Bhupen Borah, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, has formally reached out to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma concerning the death of Mridul Islam, a young Congress worker and advocate, during the ‘Raj Bhawan Chalo’ protest on December 18. In his letter dated December 21, Borah accused the Assam Police of excessive force, which he claims led to Islam’s death. He highlighted that various media outlets present during the incident reported similar observations.

Borah underscored the gravity of the tragedy, noting that Islam’s untimely death has left behind his unemployed widow, Hamida Parbin, and two young children. He implored the Chief Minister to offer Parbin a government job in her native Kamrup (Rural) district, based on her educational qualifications. This plea for support highlights both a personal and political dimension following the incident, emphasizing the human cost of political unrest.

The letter and subsequent events follow Borah and other senior Congress leaders, including Ripun Borah and Uday Bhanu Chib, being detained by Guwahati police on December 20 amid persistent protests demanding accountability for Mridul Islam’s death. These demonstrations are part of a larger nationwide movement by the Congress party held on December 20. The protests, which occurred in key cities like Jammu, Chandigarh, Guwahati, and Patna, aimed to address various contentious issues. These included Home Minister Amit Shah’s comments on BR Ambedkar, the ongoing turmoil in Manipur, alleged government inaction regarding the Adani controversy, and calls for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. Tragically, two Congress workers died during these nationwide protests.

Borah’s letter not only seeks justice and support for Islam’s bereaved family but also reflects on the broader political challenges faced in the current socio-political landscape. The incident adds to the ongoing tensions between Congress and the state authorities, further complicating the political discourse.
