Discover the Visionary Assam MLA’s Bold Plan: Transform D. Ering into a Thrilling Biodiversity Hub and Wildlife Tourism Paradise
Jonai MLA Bhubon Pegu has highlighted the immense potential for wildlife tourism in the triangular biodiversity region of D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh, Dibru Saikhowa National Park in Assam, and the proposed Poba Wildlife Sanctuary. Speaking at the Poba Festival hosted by the Mising Autonomous Council, MLA Pegu underscored the area’s ecological significance and stressed the need for robust conservation efforts to attract nature enthusiasts nationwide.
Scheduled for February 2025, the Poba Festival aims to promote the proposed Poba Wildlife Sanctuary and celebrate the region’s biodiversity. Pegu urged organizers to ensure festival activities do not disturb wildlife. The event included local conservation groups and representatives from the Eco-Development Committee (EDC) and the Community Surveillance and Monitoring Team (CSMT) of D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary.
Conservation teams from Arunachal Pradesh and Assam called for collaborative strategies to tackle issues like illegal cattle grazing and habitat encroachment. The EDC-CSMT team identified the adverse effects of grazing by cattle from nearby villages on the sanctuary’s ecosystem. Discussions also covered encroachments in the Siboguri Wildlife Corridor, a vital link between D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary and Dibru Saikhowa National Park. MLA Pegu announced efforts to address these challenges, including relocating encroachers and compensating displaced families.
The proposed Poba Wildlife Sanctuary, covering 257.29 square kilometers, is a significant biodiversity hotspot and migratory route for elephants. It includes the Poba Reserve Forest, Kobo Chapori Proposed Reserve Forest, and river islands, housing endangered species like the slow loris and diverse bird and orchid species.
MLA Pegu reiterated his commitment to biodiversity conservation and expressed optimism about transforming the area into a wildlife tourism hub through joint efforts between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. He emphasized that ecological sustainability would remain a priority in these initiatives, aligning with Assam’s broader strategy to protect its natural heritage.
