Renowned GU Professor, Celebrated Assamese Poet, and Acclaimed Bodo Novelist Triumph with Sahitya Akademi Award | Guwahati News
In Guwahati, a professor from Gauhati University’s Sanskrit department, Prof. Dipak Kumar Sharma, has been honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award for the second time, marking a significant achievement in his literary career. A resident of Nalbari district in Assam, Sharma received the award for his Sanskrit poetry work “Bhaskaracaritam,” which narrates the life of the 7th-century monarch Kumar Bhaskar Varma, a significant patron of Sanskrit studies. Previously, Sharma served as the vice-chancellor of the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University until 2022. He expressed that this recent accolade holds more significance for him than his 2018 award for the translated work “Asama Vanmanjari.” In discussing his motivation, Sharma highlighted his commitment to Sanskrit, noting the language’s enriching influence on his life and his desire to contribute to its literary corpus.
In addition to Sharma, Assamese poet Sameer Tanti and Bodo novelist Aron Raja were also recipients of the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award. Tanti was recognized for his work “Pharingbore Bator Kotha Jane,” acknowledging his 47 years of contribution to Assamese literature. He emphasized the importance of public recognition, stating that it amplifies a writer’s responsibility to society. Raja received the award for his novel “Swrni Thakhai,” further cementing Bodo literature’s position in the Indian literary landscape. These awards highlight the diverse and rich literary traditions of Assam while celebrating the individual contributions of writers who use their craft to reflect and influence societal values.
