After Laapata Ladies’ Heartbreaking Exit, Indian Hope Soars with Guneet Monga’s Triumph
India’s cinematic journey in the Oscars 2025 faces a twist as hopes move from Kiran Rao’s “Laapataa Ladies” to Guneet Monga’s short film, “Anuja.” Despite its unique narrative set in rural India in the early 2000s, “Laapataa Ladies,” a subtly subversive feminist drama written by Sneha Desai, failed to progress in the International Feature Film category. The film, which delves into societal norms with a story based on Biplab Goswami’s original concept with additional dialogues by Divyanidhi Sharma, was unable to secure a spot among the top 15 shortlisted films. Competing within this category are notable entries such as France’s “Emilia Prez” and Denmark’s “The Girl with The Needle,” among others. The Oscars feature submissions from 85 countries and regions, making it a stiff competition.
Focus now shifts to “Anuja,” a live-action short film produced by Guneet Monga Kapoor that highlights child labor within the garment industry. Directed by Suchitra Matai, and featuring Nagesh Bhonsle, “Anuja” has successfully reached the shortlist of 15 films in the live-action short category, distinguishing itself from a pool of 180 entries. The selection of this poignant film has garnered admiration from Oscar Academy member Ujwal Nirgudkar, who expressed pride in the global acknowledgment of Indian talent through Monga’s work. Other noteworthy contenders in this category include “Touch,” “Kneecap,” “Vermiglio,” and “Flow,” reflecting the diversity and depth of narratives vying for attention.
While India’s journey in the International Feature Film category halts with “Laapataa Ladies,” hope persists with “Anuja,” representing Indian cinema’s storytelling prowess and highlighting critical social issues on an international platform.
