Unveiling Justice: Meghalaya HC’s Bold Aerial Survey to Combat Illegal Coal Mining
Meghalaya Initiates Aerial Survey to Curb Illegal Coal Mining
In a decisive step to address illegal coal mining, sale, and transportation, the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) will conduct an aerial survey across the state. This action follows observations by the High Court division bench, comprising Justice Hamarsan Sing Thangkhiew and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh, on recent progress made in tackling these issues. The comprehensive survey, executed by Garuda UAV Soft Solutions, will span 769.7 square kilometers. The project has secured financial backing of Rs 7.26 crore and is set to be completed by January 2025.
Further efforts to resolve the illegal mining crisis involve the Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL), tasked with sealing abandoned coal mines. Initial focus areas include Sutnga in the East Jaintia Hills and Agremgittim in the South Garo Hills. The High Court has emphasized the urgency of these initiatives, urging the state government to prioritize measures particularly in the winter season when illegal activities often surge.
In addition, the Court has addressed complaints concerning illegal coal transportation and violations of standard operating procedures (SOPs). The state government is required to report on these issues and ensure the swift auction of seized coal.
This concerted effort underscores the judiciary’s resolve to bring accountability and regulation to Meghalaya’s coal industry, promising a more vigilant fight against illegal mining practices.
