Brave Officer Injured in Harrowing Machete Attack During High-Stakes Anti-Drug Operation in Jorhat
In Titabar, Jorhat district, a police officer was injured during an anti-narcotics operation on Monday night when drug smugglers attacked him with a machete. The injured officer, Rituparna Thengal, suffered wounds to his left hand and palm. Led by DSP (Probationary) Kaushik Kalita, the police team had established a temporary checkpoint on the Golaghat-Titabar road based on intelligence reports about suspected drug traffickers in the area. At approximately 9:50 p.m., they identified and stopped a vehicle matching the given description. As the police approached, one of the vehicle’s occupants attacked them. Despite the violent encounter, the police managed to subdue the suspects.
The two accused, Rafique Ali and Ritu Ahmed, were arrested, and a significant amount of heroin was confiscated from their possession, along with their vehicle. The suspects have been charged under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988. The police suspect that the seized drugs were smuggled from Nagaland, a region sharing a border with the Golaghat district of Assam. The porous nature of the northeastern Indian borders makes them susceptible to drug trafficking, often via routes linked to Myanmar, known for being a significant producer of opium poppy and synthetic drugs. Myanmar is part of the ‘Golden Triangle’ with Thailand and Laos, notorious for drug production.
The injured officer is currently receiving treatment at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, and the police continue to investigate the case. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing drug trafficking in the region.
