Kolkata, Dec 16: On the 53rd anniversary of Vijay Diwas, India and Bangladesh commemorate their historic victory in the 1971 India-Pakistan war. This day marks the liberation of Bangladesh and is celebrated as a testament to the enduring bond between the two nations. Veterans and officers from both countries gather to honor their shared past and discuss hopes for the future.

Wing Commander (Retired) D.J. Kler shared poignant memories of the war, highlighting the sacrifices made to create Bangladesh and liberate its people. He expressed concern over the current dire situation in Bangladesh, particularly the plight of minorities, and extended warm hospitality to visiting Bangladeshi delegates.

Major Rathindra Kumar Bhattacharya, a retired Indian officer, spoke about the importance of this annual reunion, describing it as a homecoming. He remained hopeful about Bangladesh’s future, believing challenges would be temporary and asserting India’s commitment to maintaining peace.

From Bangladesh, Major General Asim underscored the significance of the shared history, celebrating the cooperative efforts of the Indian Army in Bangladesh’s liberation. He viewed this annual commemoration as a cornerstone for building a lasting relationship.

Major General Abdul Salam Chaudhuri, retired since 2009, addressed concerns about minority treatment in Bangladesh, blaming false narratives for distorting the truth. He affirmed the robustness of India-Bangladesh relations, evident in their joint celebrations.

This year, eight Indian war veterans and two serving officers have traveled to Dhaka for Bangladesh’s Victory Day celebrations, while eight ‘Mukti joddhas’ and two serving Bangladeshi officers are in Kolkata for Vijay Diwas events. This reciprocal exchange symbolizes the mutual respect and camaraderie between the nations, indicating a promising future for their relations. Vijay Diwas, celebrated on December 16, not only reflects on past victories but also strengthens the enduring friendship between India and Bangladesh.
