Revolutionary Vision: Assam CM Champions ‘One Nation, One Election’ for Unprecedented Growth and Cost Efficiency
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed robust support for the One Nation, One Election initiative, advocating for its potential to conserve public funds and expedite national development. He argues that frequent elections impose the Model Code of Conduct, stalling developmental activities for extended periods. In Assam alone, Sarma notes, each election cycle incurs a cost of around Rs 1,000 crore, amounting to Rs 2,000 crore overall. He believes that simultaneous elections could drastically cut these expenses and streamline political campaigns.
Sarma highlighted that India originally adhered to a unified election model post-Independence, which was later disrupted by frequent dissolutions of legislative assemblies under President’s Rule by successive governments, particularly Congress. He emphasized that reinstating this system would enhance governance efficiency and benefit citizens.
The Chief Minister also addressed the financial burden on political parties during frequent elections, which are funded largely through public donations. By holding concurrent elections, Sarma suggests that campaign costs could be significantly reduced, allowing political resources to be better utilized.
In reflecting on historical practices, Sarma advocates for a return to the simultaneous election system, suggesting it would bring about more effective governance and financial prudence.
