Revitalize Health and Happiness: Transforming Nutritional Outcomes in Meghalaya with Traditional Foods
Dr. Firdaus Samad and Arindam Biswas highlight the urgent need to address shifting dietary patterns in Meghalaya by reviving traditional local foods to achieve optimal nutritional outcomes. The state faces rising cases of malnutrition-related issues such as stunted growth, obesity, and diet-related adult diseases including hypertension and diabetes. These problems are largely driven by changes in the local food environment characterized by market availability, pricing, vendor types, and aggressive marketing of ultra-processed foods (UPFs).
The traditional reliance on nutrient-rich local foods is being undermined by an increasing dependence on market-sold items and UPFs, which are high in calories but lack essential nutrients. This dietary shift exacerbates health issues, as UPFs often lead to serious conditions like obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. Meanwhile, traditional foods offer richer and more affordable nutrient options, including high protein, calcium, and vitamin content. Indigenous foods such as Jaiur and Sohphlang are highlighted for their superior nutritional profiles compared to commercial alternatives.
However, despite their benefits, traditional food systems are declining due to factors like deforestation, monoculture farming, and aggressive processed food marketing. To combat these challenges, the authors advocate for initiatives like revitalizing home gardens and integrating traditional foods into government programs. Policies should also aim to support farmers cultivating traditional crops and celebrate local cuisines to reinforce cultural identity. These strategies promise to address malnutrition pragmatically while preserving cultural heritage and promoting sustainable agriculture, offering a holistic approach to improving the nutritional health of Meghalaya’s population.
The authors, students from the Indian Institute of Public Health in Shillong, urge a concerted effort to reintegrate these nutritionally dense, traditional foods into daily diets to reverse current trends and restore community health effectively.
