Transformative Progress: India-Myanmar Border Fencing in Manipur’s Moreh Underway to Ensure Security and Unity
The Border Roads Organisation of India has initiated the construction of a border fence along the India-Myanmar boundary in the vicinity of Moreh, located in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district. This initiative is part of Project Sewak, aimed at bolstering security and enhancing surveillance in the region.
However, the project has faced opposition from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) representing the Kuki-Zo community within Tengnoupal district. These groups have voiced their resistance to the establishment of the border fencing, citing concerns about its impact on their community.
In addition, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) in Manipur has also expressed strong opposition to the proposed fencing, particularly in the Naga-inhabited areas along the border. The organization insists that any fencing work should be preceded by a correction of the border in accordance with traditional demarcations.
Despite these objections, the Border Roads Organisation continues with its plans for the border fencing project, underscoring its commitment to national security and regional stability. The development highlights the complexities involved in balancing security needs with community concerns in border regions, where cultural and historical ties often intersect with geopolitical considerations.
