Shillong, December 10: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) marked the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on International Human Rights Day 2024. The event’s theme was “Our Rights, Our Future Right Now,” and it underscored the immediate need to uphold human rights globally.
Distinguished attendees included Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar, Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) chairperson Agatha K Sangma, and MHRC chairperson, Justice (retd) T. Vaiphei. In his address, Governor Vijayashankar emphasized the need to reduce human rights violations in Meghalaya, aspiring to create a society where dignity and hope prevail for all. He reiterated his commitment to embedding human rights values throughout the state.
Highlighting the significance of human rights, MSCPCR chairperson Agatha K Sangma described them as fundamental to human dignity, equality, and freedom. She cited the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a global framework safeguarding fundamental rights, such as the rights to life, liberty, security, education, work, and freedom from oppression and discrimination. Sangma remarked that these rights are not privileges but inherent entitlements that must be respected.
Discussing the year’s theme “Our Rights, Our Future Right Now,” Sangma called it a reminder of the pressing responsibility to ensure inalienable human rights are protected today, not as a future aspiration.
The ceremony was attended by other notable figures, including DGP Idashisha Nongrang, Shillong Times Editor Patricia Mukhim, and MHRC member Baffindalyne Giri.
The event served as a vital reminder of the shared commitment to human rights advocacy and the continuous fight against violations, positioning human rights protection as an urgent priority for societies globally and locally.
