Miraculous Reunion: Rare Migratory Bird Gloriously Returns to Loktak Lake After 40 Years!
Manipur wildlife conservationists are celebrating a major ecological achievement as the Tufted Pochard, a rare waterbird species, has been spotted at Loktak Lake for the first time in nearly 40 years. The Loktak Development Authority (LDA) announced this exciting development on December 9, underscoring the lake’s pivotal role as a sanctuary for migratory birds. Loktak Lake, recognized as a Ramsar site, is strategically positioned in the Central Asian and East Asian-Australasian Flyways, serving as an essential refuge for a variety of bird species.
LDA Chairman M Asnikumar Singh highlighted the importance of the Tufted Pochard’s return, stating, “This is more than a conservation victory—it’s a celebration of our shared responsibility to protect delicate ecosystems.” The resurgence of this rare bird indicates that the lake is thriving as a habitat for migratory species.
In addition to the Tufted Pochard, Loktak Lake now hosts a diverse range of migratory birds, including the Red-crested Pochard, Gadwall, Common Coot, Great Crested Grebe, Ferruginous Pochard, Lesser Whistling Duck, Northern Shoveller, Mandarin Duck, and Bronze-winged and Pheasant-tailed Jacanas. This impressive array showcases the lake’s ecological significance and biodiversity.
The success of the lake as a sanctuary can be attributed to efforts by conservation groups like People for Animals, Unique Wildlife Protection Committee, and Sangai Protection Forum, which have been vital in safeguarding these critical habitats. Singh called on local fishing communities to tackle illegal hunting and safeguard nesting areas, emphasizing the role of migratory birds as crucial indicators of the lake’s ecological health.
The return of the Tufted Pochard to Loktak Lake not only marks a conservation milestone but also underscores the ongoing commitment required to protect these delicate ecosystems.
