Despite keeping the budget to $8.2 billion, over 9.5 million tickets were sold, making it a significant global event.
India participated with 117 athletes but won only six medals—one silver and five bronze—earning a 71st-place rank. This performance highlighted the need for strategy and infrastructure improvements to establish India as a formidable sporting nation. Notable performances included Neeraj Chopra’s silver in javelin and multiple achievements in shooting and wrestling. The Indian contingent was led by flag-bearers P.V. Sindhu and Sharath Kamal at the opening ceremony. India’s historical Olympic participation dates back to 1900, yet the nation faces challenges like poor talent nurturing and inadequate sports management compared to Asian counterparts like China and Japan.
Looking forward, India aims to earn respect as a sporting nation by focusing on select sports tailored to its diverse regions. The country’s goal is to win at least 25 medals by 2028, increasing to 100 by 2040, necessitating significant investments in talent development, infrastructure, and strategic execution. Such initiatives would not only enhance India’s Olympic prospects but also reflect the health and vibrancy of its youth on the world stage.
