South Korean Finance Minister’s Bold Commitment: Unyielding Efforts to Preserve Sovereign Rating Amidst Political Turmoil
Seoul, December 8 (IANS) – Amid a deepening political crisis in South Korea, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok has pledged that the government will strive to maintain its sovereign credit rating while advancing economic policies without disruption. This commitment comes in the wake of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s controversial declaration of martial law, which was swiftly retracted last week. Despite the political turbulence, Yoon narrowly dodged impeachment on Saturday. The impeachment motion failed after the ruling party orchestrated a boycott, leaving the vote short of the necessary two-thirds majority to suspend his presidential powers.
The minister’s statement highlights the government’s determination to steer the country through the ongoing political challenges. An emergency meeting of economic ministers is scheduled to occur later in the day, during which officials are expected to release a joint statement to reassure both domestic and international stakeholders of South Korea’s economic stability.
The country’s main opposition party, the Democratic Party, has declared its intention to persist in pursuing President Yoon’s impeachment efforts weekly. The recent attempt failed due to insufficient quorum, but the party remains steadfast in its resolve.
In a related context, South Korea commenced its annual consultation with S&P Global in September to evaluate the nation’s credit status and discuss other critical financial agendas. In April, S&P upheld South Korea’s long-term sovereign credit rating at “AA,” affirming its stable economic outlook despite recent political upheaval. The “AA” rating, the third-highest on S&P’s scale, has been maintained since August 2016 when the country’s credit assessment was elevated from “AA-.”
South Korea’s resolve to safeguard its economic reputation amidst internal political strife underscores the nation’s strategic focus on maintaining confidence in its economic governance and sovereign creditworthiness.
