Breaking: Dramatic Retreat – Syrian Government Forces Pull Back as Rebels Courageously Advance on Damascus
Rebel forces in Syria have seized control of Daraa City in the southwest, moving closer to the capital, Damascus, and threatening to topple President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The advance puts pressure on Assad’s leadership, which has lasted over two decades. The Syrian government has pulled back from several Damascus suburbs, including Moadamia al-Sham and Daraya, according to reports by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Opposition forces, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, are pushing from both the north and south towards Damascus. Their leader, Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, has urged fighters to be compassionate with civilians as they progress. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, after meeting with Turkish and Iranian officials, urged dialogue between the Syrian government and legal opposition, explicitly excluding terrorist groups like Hayat Tahrir al-Sham from such talks.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has asserted that the U.S. should abstain from intervening in Syria, suggesting that the U.S. has no stake in the conflict. Trump criticized former President Barack Obama for not acting on previous commitments regarding Syria, arguing that the potential removal of Assad could benefit the country. Trump emphasized his position via a post on Truth Social, stating, “THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!”
The ongoing Syrian conflict, which began in 2011 during the Arab Spring, has resulted in over 300,000 civilian deaths and displaced millions, according to the United Nations. UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen has called for calm, urging all parties to protect civilians and adhere to international humanitarian law. The situation remains tense as regional and global powers grapple with the rapidly changing dynamics on the ground.
